COLORADO Law/Reform

ADOPTION RECORDS have been closed since1942. All adoption records are closed upon finalization. A Court Order requiring "good cause" is needed to release information. The adoptee must be 21 yrs. old. Some agencies will furnish non-identifying information to an adoptee, although a Court Order may be necessary. Legislation passed in 7/93 allows release of medical and non-identifying info.

For copies of FINAL DECREE of ADOPTION, write to the clerk of the district court in the county where the adoption took place.

Records and papers in relinquishment and adoption proceedings from and after the filing of a petition are confidential and open to inspection only upon Order of the Court for good cause shown. Colorado has set a voluntary adoption registry in place to relay information between adoptive parents, biological parents and adult adoptees. (see above)

In Denver searches contact the Juvenile Court. All other counties contact the District Court. Hospital records are possibly available through a doctor.
