KANSAS Law/Reform

Kansas is an "open state." Kansas Law provides for the reunion of Birth Families upon the adoptee reaching the age of 18, to either the relinquishing birth parent or adoptee upon request. For more information Contact:

(rings to desk of Janet Kuntzsch,
 which starts the process of
obtaining records)
Supervisor is Lois Mitchell, MSW

You must send a copy of a photo ID and request a copy of your adoption folder or you may ask to be put in contact with your child/birth parent. Under the law of Kansas, they are ordered to make the search and make the initial contact, or you may request the records and do your own search.

You are entitled to a copy of your Original birth certificate. These may be ordered from State of Kansas,

Division of Vital Statistics,
900 SW Jackson St.,
Topeka, KS 66612-1230.

The cost is $10.00. Specify that you want your ORIGINAL birth certificate. It also is a good idea to send a copy of a photo ID along with this.

From Lindsay:
In the State of Kansas the word "adoption" carries a heck of a lot of weight. Be sure to identify yourself as an adoptee/birth parent when making any request to the State of Kansas. Unlike other states where we do anything to keep from mentioning the dreaded A-word, in Kansas it is really the word which gets things into the fast lane.
